What’s the difference between traditional bamboo and strand-woven bamboo flooring?

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth. China enjoys the most abundant bamboo resources in the world, which is famous as “bamboo kingdom”. Bamboo is mainly used as construction materials, furniture, pulp, plywood, etc. Products vary from solid bamboo, strand woven bamboo, raw bamboo canes, etc. Since the bamboo products are natural, with smooth texture and grace appearance, the products are quite popular in the market.

Bamboo flooring is of the most popular bamboo products in the western market. Since bamboo flooring varies from solid bamboo and strand woven bamboo. Do you know the difference between them?

After harvesting, we will choose mature bamboo as raw materials, then split the bamboo canes in longitudinal direction and remove the bamboo skin. The strips are naturally light yellow color, but we will steam and thermal treat them to a light brown color (carbonized). After treating and drying, the strips will be connected in several ways to make the final product.

Strand woven bamboo is much harder than traditional bamboo, even harder than the best tropical hardwood. But it also lose the appearance of traditional bamboo texture because it’s compressed. Strand-woven bamboo can be used both indoor and outdoor, mostly used for outdoor decking, for it’s anti-decay and water proof characteristic.

Engineered bamboo flooring is made in a slightly different way. It consists of a base layer of plywood running perpendicular to a top layer of bamboo. This method of constructing the boards of flooring gives dimensional stability meaning that it can be installed over all types of subfloors. It depends what market favor or project requirement to choose the color. But in some very wet area, we suggest to use carbonized bamboo decking instead of natural color. Because natural color bamboo contains more sugar inside, and it is easily get mold or be attacked by the termite
